The naming of prehistoric eras refer to cultures rather than dates. So for instance when the Middle East had developed a Bronze age culture, Britain was still in the stone age.

The following simplified date ranges have been used on this web site to indicate when the cultures prevailed in our area; you can click on in the navigation bar on the left to view a description of life in Chobham during that period.

8000 – 3000 BC Mesolithic or Middle Stone Age
3000 – 2000 BC Neolithic or New Stone Age
2000 – 550 BC Bronze Age
550 BC – 43 AD Iron Age
43 – 500 AD Romano-British
500 – 1066 AD Saxon
1066 – 1537 AD Medieval
1537 – 1700 Post dissolution of Chertsey Abbey
